Clint Hill was a Secret Service Agent assigned to the White House and served Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. He was in the motorcade in Dallas on November 22, 1963, assigned to protect First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, when President Kennedy was assassinated. He is credited with saving Mrs. Kennedy's life. After rising through the ranks of the Secret Service, he retired in 1975 as Assistant Director, responsible for all protective forces. Hill remains in contact with the current U.S. Secret Service and is actively involved in training activities.
Lisa McCubbin:
An award winning journalist, she began her career as the host of her own call-in radio show before transferring to television news. Starting out as the early morning live reporter covering overnight breaking news and weather on the CBS-affiliate in Bakersfield, California, she moved through a series of assignments, ending up in the anchor chair as co-host of NBC's early morning news program "Sunrise" before the "Today" show. Later she spent six years in the Middle East, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Doha, Qatar as a freelance writer and foreign correspondent.
While living in Doha, Lisa reconnected with a longtime family friend, Jerry Blaine, who was struggling to write a memoir about his years in the Secret Service during the Kennedy administration. The two decided to collaborate and "The Kennedy Detail" was published in 2010. It has since sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide.
While writing "The Kennedy Detail" Lisa met Clint Hill, retired Assistant Director of the U.S. Secret Service, and who is best known as the courageous agent who reacted when shots were fired at President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on 11/22/63. Hill had rarely spoken about "that dreadful day in Dallas" and had vowed never to write a book. Lisa convinced Mr. Hill that he had a rare and unique story to tell, and that it was valuable to history. He finally agreed, and together they wrote "Mrs. Kennedy and Me" which became a #1 NY Times Best Seller and has sold more than 200,000 copies worldwide.
In 2013, Lisa and Clint Hill have collaborated once again with "Five Days in November" (Simon and Schuster, November 2013), an intensely personal and poignant first-hand account of the time period from November 21 - 25, 1963, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The story is accentuated with over 170 photos that help readers understand the depth of the tragedy as well as the inside story of the courage of Jacqueline Kennedy as she led our country through those darkest of days.
Through her work on these books, Lisa has had the privilege and opportunity to visit and speak at U.S. Secret Service offices all over the country, and to meet hundreds of former and current agents. My review:
What a good listen this audio was! It is well written and very informative. I learned lots of interesting facts that I didnt know about this event. I reall liked how it was organized in the book, Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 etc. Another thing that I liked alot was that the story was told by Jackie Kennedy's Secret Service Agent. We hear alot about this tragedy but we hear from historians or crazy conspiracy people it is nice to actually hear the details form someone who actually lived it!
Its also a nice book because it doesnt feel like a dry history book, it feels like a story. I also can really tell from this story the emotional impact that it had on Clint Hill, he really cared about the Kennedy's and it must hurt for him sometimes to retell this story but I am very appriciative of his willingness to share the story with the public. Yes some of the facts we already know but like I said above its told with a different perspective. Thats what makes the book compeling. Its also a very short listen which is also nice in any audio book.
Narration:
I have listened to another book this narrator read as well (Wilson) and I think he read both of these books well. He was animated and lively when needed and somber and serious when necessary which is always very good in any narration. He kept a good and pleasant tone that made the listener want to listen. I will say however that there was and introduction by Clint Hill which I liked and I would I have rather had him narate the whole book instead of this other guy, but I can understand why he didnt.
My final verdict:
I would highly reccomend this audiobook its a very good and worthwhile listen, it does break your heart and is a terrible tragedy but its a story that needs to be told and remembered.
