Meet the Author:

Originally from Carrollton, Illinois, author/agent/publisher Barbara Casey attended the University of North Carolina, N.C. State University, and N.C. Wesleyan College where she received a BA degree, summa cum laude, with a double major in English and history. In 1978 she left her position as Director of Public Relations and Vice President of Development at North Carolina Wesleyan College to write full time and develop her own manuscript evaluation and editorial service. In 1995 she established the Barbara Casey Agency and since that time has represented authors from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and Japan. In 2014, she became a partner with Strategic Media Books, an independent nonfiction publisher of true crime, where she oversees acquisitions, day-to-day operations, and book production.

Ms. Casey has written over a dozen award-winning books of fiction and nonfiction for both young adults and adults. The awards include the National Association of University Women Literary Award, the Sir Walter Raleigh Literary Award, the Independent Publisher Book Award, the Dana Award for Outstanding Novel, the IP Best Book for Regional Fiction, among others. Two of her nonfiction books have been optioned for major films, one of which is under contract.

Her award-winning articles, short stories, and poetry for adults have appeared in both national and international publications including the North Carolina Christian Advocate Magazine, The New East Magazine, the Raleigh (N.C.) News and Observer, the Rocky Mount (N.C.) Sunday Telegram, Dog Fancy, ByLine, The Christian Record, Skirt! Magazine, and True Story. A thirty-minute television special which Ms. Casey wrote and coordinated was broadcast on WRAL, Channel 5, in Raleigh, North Carolina. She also received special recognition for her editorial work on the English translations of Albanian children’s stories. Her award-winning science fiction short stories for adults are featured in The Cosmic Unicorn and CrossTime science fiction anthologies. Ms. Casey's essays and other works appear in The Chrysalis Reader, the international literary journal of the Swedenborg Foundation, 221 One-Minute Monologues from Literature (Smith and Kraus Publishers), and A Cup of Comfort (Adams Media Corporation).

Ms. Casey is a former director of BookFest of the Palm Beaches, Florida, where she served as guest author and panelist. She has served as judge for the Pathfinder Literary Awards in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, Florida, and was the Florida Regional Advisor for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators from 1991 through 2003. In 2018 Ms. Casey received the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and Top Professional Award for her extensive experience and notable accomplishments in the field of publishing and other areas. She makes her home on the top of a mountain in northwest Georgia with her husband and three cats who adopted her, Homer, Reese, and Earl Gray - Reese’s best friend.

My Review:
From the moment I got this book, I was interested in reading it. The cover art was very beautiful and even the feel of the book draws you in. I did not realize that this was book 4 in a series, so that was a bit frustrating. It also maybe accounts for the fact why I could not figure out the setting at the very beginning. I found that confusing but otherwise I don't have any other qualms.

The book was different and interesting and was a nice read. For me I found it a nice short read. The type or font of the book was nice.

The characters were memorable but for me I have a hard time deciding a favorite. The story for the most part was easy to follow (except for the setting qualm mentioned above). I would like to read the other books in this series. From my experience I think you could start the series from anywhere for me as a reader however I would start from the beginning.

Final verdict:
Would I recommend this book? Yes I would. I enjoyed it very much. It was a good read.

Author Interview:

Tell us about the process for coming up with the cover.

One day my publishing consultant had me meet her at the Tattered Cover–an independent bookstore in Denver–to check out the covers of other books. She wanted to get a feel for what I thought would work best for my book. It didn’t take long for me to go into overwhelm. There are so many possibilities, so many styles. Later that day, I was talking to my sister, Janet, an award winning artist who has sold many paintings. I told her about the excursion and she offered to paint a picture for the cover. I felt so honored!

 

The painting is based on this photo of the river near the campground where I did much of the writing. (Such a serene place to create.) I finally got her to come camping with me one weekend, and she loved the scenery. She took a lot of pictures and made some sketches while we were there. After she returned to her studio in Washington, she put it all on canvas, using pastels.

When she sent me the jpg file, I was blown away. It was exactly what I wanted, to convey the feeling of the book!

What research did you do for your book?

I guess you could say I’ve been doing research for all my books ever since I started down my spiritual path in 1993. I was lucky to have found an extraordinary teacher, Brugh Joy, and worked with him until his death in 2009. In his conferences, we did a lot of meditation, dream interpretation, energy work. It was always a journey of self-discovery, devoted to more deeply knowing our true selves, at soul level, and embracing all aspects of our being. We worked to reveal the patterns that were present in our lives, the meaning of our dreams, finding the rhythm of our souls’ intentions. It all opened us up to a greater understanding of what it means to be a human being here on Earth, and it brought us to compassion, for ourselves and others.

 

So then what is a spiritual romance?

My intent is to show how these self-discovery tools are actively used, by characters, in their lives.

 

So many self-help books will tell you to “do this” or “practice that,” like a checklist of all the things to do to make your life perfect. None of that stuff really works for me. It, first of all, comes from the head and not the heart, and a (usually) misguided idea of what is perfect. It mostly leaves out the soul, and what the soul’s true desire is. Which has its own concept of what is truly right for each individual.

 

Myself, I need to see things in action, see how people evolve, how their paths unfold. So the characters in my book meet and fall in love, as romance characters do. But they also explore the deeper aspects of what’s happening to them in a spiritual, expanded-perspective way. They’re learning about themselves, accepting themselves, as they grow through the relationships.

 

What is one of your favorite inspirational quotes?

“[You are] redeemed by catching the overview of your life and how such a sacrifice unfolds into further development. What has to be grieved is the giving up on what wasn't to be and appreciating what is and will be. An understanding of the parts of Self, the various stages and the temporal/eternal mysteries give us the unique experience our life reflects. Breaking spells, recognizing patterns, and appreciating developing resources, gifts, and graces bring us into the wholeness of our Being. We are simply what we are...nothing more...and certainly nothing less.”     ~ Brugh Joy

 

What I so like about this quote is that it speaks to the process of coming to self-acceptance, and ultimately compassion for oneself.

 

What are your hobbies?

Nearly two decades ago, I casually mentioned to my husband that I’d like to try weaving. He loves hunting down good deals, so that was like dangling catnip in front of a cat! Without saying a word to me, he found a woman nearby who had a 45 inch Schacht 8-shaft floor loom for sale. She must have known it was my time to take on a new craft, because she gave us quite a surprise. For the price of the loom, she gave us all her books, reeds, shuttles, and 22 plastic tubs full of yarns!

 

Needless to say, I’ve been weaving ever since. Towels for family, afghans for friends, baby blankets for grandkids, table runners and napkins for us. Scarves for presents at Christmas. Alas, one can weave only so many towels and scarves. There are still so many more patterns to try out though, so my latest project is to weave a quilt. I’m making “squares” of all the cool patterns I’ve wanted to play with, and will put them together like a puzzle, separated by thin borders. At this point I have about one third of the squares done. This is not a quick project by any means. It will be several more years before it’s finished. I’ll post pictures on my website as I go along.

 

Weaving is very meditative for me. It crowds out all the noise of whatever else is going on, puts me into a groove of creativity and peace, opens me to the deeper forces of life. I find it feeds the writing, as it clears my head for the words to start flowing.

Guest Post: The Setting behind “Between These Walls”

 

One of the key locations in my historical fiction novel, “Between These Walls,” is Mauthausen Concentration Camp near Linz in upper Austria. This is where one of the book’s characters, Bruno Schmidt, is assigned to help camp commandant Ziereis maintain discipline. It is here that my father, George Newman, was held prisoner for eight months from 1944 to 1945 – a historical fact that I wove into the novel. I first visited the camp in 1996 with my oldest son Adrian. It was an eye opening experience. As we walked through the barracks with their three-tiered wooden bunks, the gas chambers, crematoria and execution rooms, we couldn’t help but feel an atmosphere of doom enveloping us. As if the evil perpetrated within these walls was still hiding in there. Once we emerged from the buildings into the brilliant sunlight of summer we looked around and saw the peaceful, verdant country side, which looked very much as it would have during the war, the timeline of the novel. It was hard to imagine how people living in the surrounding farms from 1938 to 1945 could not have been aware of what was happening in the camp on a daily basis. Despite the bright sunshine and warm air, there were no birds chirping and flitting about. It seemed as if the whole world was in mourning for the victims who died at the camp. After going through the buildings, Adrian and I walked down the 186 steps dubbed the “Stairs of Death” to the quarry where, during the war, prisoners were worked to death. They were forced to carry 50-kilogram rocks up the stairs on their backs. As I stood by the small lake in the quarry I imagined my father hauling such boulders up the stairs. It is in honour of and to the memory of my father that I wrote “Between These Walls.” Having my son there to teach him about family history was also very important to me, as the novel emphasizes the importance of family as seen through the lives of three families whose wartime fortunes and misfortunes are detailed in the book.

About  the book: it's the story of a young Russian-American DJ who loses his girlfriend to drugs. Not that she takes them, rather that he never quits. So one day, in the early summer, dumped, broken-hearted, and withdrawing, he snaps. The rest of the summer, and therefore the book, is his quest to win her back through music. He tries to produce the song of the summer, but this leads him to encounter other hidden traumas (the major loss of his mother, the minor loss of his job). But he pushes through. He has always been a successful artist, but that isn't enough, thus puts all his eggs into landing a big show at the night club where he works. Will the show go well? Will he win his ex back? Or will the older lady helping him get back on his feet be the one he really falls for?

 

 

About me: The official version is online in various places, so I'll share the personal one here on the Avid Reader . . . I'm an indie author on a journey. It's not for love, since I found that when I married my wife last year. It's not for education, since I earned an MFA two years ago. Maybe it's for money, although I haven't exactly figured that one out. But if I had to guess I do it because we are stories. Sharing them, hearing them, writing them is who I am, it's who we all are.

“You’re too far away,” he said, pulling at the sleeve of my baseball tee a little harder.

Heat rose in my cheeks, and a ball of fuzzy flutter overtook my stomach. I wiggled across the windshield and ended up exactly where I wanted to be—comfortably settled in his arms. Dad was determined to make sure I kept my virginity intact until I was married, by all means necessary. The temptation that was Drew might very well make him fail. With all my physical reactions to his nearness and the presence of my overbearing morals, it made me question my affections and urges. Were they the real deal? What if they were simply Wonderlust, yet another doubt good ol’ Dad had drilled in my head when I was barely starting to look like a woman instead of a young girl. He’d said, “Any feelings you think are love before you turn twenty-one aren’t really love. They’re just lust.” I reined in the lustful, curiosity, and the feeling of shame that quickly followed.

If Dad could hear my thoughts, I’d definitely be a goner. The thought trotted through my mind, and I mentally shivered over the possibility.

But he can’t, and I won’t say anything if you decide to bend his little rule. What’s life without a little rebellion?

I inwardly rolled my eyes and directed my thoughts toward the same place.

Echo, even if you wanted him to, he wouldn’t hear you, because only I can, remember? You exist only in my head. Besides, the reason Dad is so strict is because of what happened to you. He is terrified your history will repeat itself with me. Talk about living in someone else’s shadow. You and I are nothing alike.

You know what they say, Eden, “Great minds...”

At that, I laughed mockingly within the confines of my head. Unlike you, Echo, I’m responsible and think things through. You didn’t then and still don’t.

I am too responsible, Echo whined, and I do think things through. You wouldn’t be here with this boy right now if I hadn’t.

Oh, you did, the resentment I felt toward her rolled through me, sweeping any tact I may have used with her swiftly away, then why are you dead, Echo?

My challenge was met with silence—I sensed her withdraw into the deeper recesses of my mind and instantly felt guilty, something I knew she felt too because of how our emotions were tethered and intertwined.

About Lynn:

Lynn Veevers is originally from Washington State. An award winning author she is both traditionally and self published. With her mother being from Christchurch, New Zealand and her father being a well-traveled retired Navy Chief, Lynn has always had a fascination with different cultures around the world. An avid reader, she prefers books that take her to a place she's never been and teach her something new at the same time. The Young Adult Genre is her absolute favorite to read, so it comes as no surprise that it is also her favorite to write. Lynn, on average, pens two to three novels a year.

Today Lynn lives with her husband and kids in Southeast Oklahoma. Meet the Author:

Doug Chamberlain, the grandson of homesteaders in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska, grew up with the "country values" instilled in him in the rural environment of a very small community. Even though there were only 10 students in his high school graduating class, several of his classmates pursued careers, public service, and military service that took them to various locations around the world. His rural values and the foundational reinforcement of those values at the University of Wyoming and John Brown University proved to be tested in their entirety when he became a Marine Infantry Officer in the Viet Nam War. His life changing experiences in that war proved to haunt him during his search to solve a mystery that spanned 50 years...and Bury Him details the sordid facts and the horrible truth that had eluded him.
