An American Duchess Release Day Post

An American Duchess

Title: An American Duchess

Author: Sharon Page

Release Day!

About An American Duchess: Set on a crumbling English manor estate during the height of the Roaring Twenties, an American duchess must decide how much she's willing to risk for the life she truly desires…

It's 1922, and New York heiress Zoe Gifford longs for the freedoms promised by the Jazz Age. Headstrong and brazen, but bound by her father's will to marry before she can access his fortune, Zoe arranges for a brief marriage to Sebastian Hazelton, whose aristocratic British family sorely needs a benefactor.

Once in England, her foolproof plan to wed, inherit and divorce proves more complicated than Zoe had anticipated. Nigel Hazelton, Duke of Langford and Sebastian's older brother, is as austere and imposing as the family's ancestral estate. Still reeling from the Great War, Nigel is now staging a one-man battle against a rapidly changing world—and the outspoken Zoe represents everything he's fighting against.

When circumstances compel Zoe to marry Nigel rather than Sebastian, their heated quarrelling begets passion of another sort. But with Nigel unwilling to change with the times, will Zoe be forced to choose between her husband and her dreams?

Deborah Heal and Michelle Babb Guest Posts

Today’s guest bloggers are Deborah Heal and Michelle Babb. Deborah is the author of the Time and Again trilogy, Christian fiction for teens and adults, and Michelle is the narrator for the audiobooks of this trilogy.

I would like to thank them and welcome them to my blog and I would like to thank them also for letting me hold a giveaway as well!

Deborah: My books are part historical fiction and part mystery with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. I call them history mysteries, but with the amount of factual southern Illinois history woven into the fiction, you might be tempted to call them “faction

I’ve always wanted to go back in time to see what the olden days were really like. So I decided to let my characters get to see some of my favorite historical figures and events. In Time and Again, Abby and Merri get to meet Abraham Lincoln as he debates with Stephen Douglas over the spread of slavery. And they watch brave Charlotte Miles turn her attic into a stop on the Underground Railroad.

I’ve always loved the adventure and heroism of Lewis and Clark, so in Unclaimed Legacy, Merri, Abby, and her boyfriend John get to explore Camp River Dubois, the Expedition’s point of departure near Wood River, Illinois while also solving a 150-year-old murder mystery.

I grew up hearing about the horrid John Crenshaw. He got rich using slave labor at his salt mine, and his mansion was a stop on the reverse Underground Railroad in Equality. Naturally, his creepy old house makes the perfect spot for Abby and her friends to solve a History Mystery in Every Hill and Mountain.

Michelle:  The historical facts in these books are accurate and well-researched, but what I especially like is the idea of having a personal connection to historical events. In these books, Abby and Merri  feel connected to Charlotte by watching her on the computer, and this gives them more of an appreciation for the issues of that time, including the Civil War and the Underground Railroad.

Deborah: I was tickled pink to get the chance to turn my trilogy into audiobooks. Michelle did an awesome job of bringing each character to life. And, man, were there a lot of characters, each with his or her own accent and verbal idiosyncrasies! But Michelle managed southern Illinois slave dialects and Chicago accents and everything in between!

Michelle:  For each character, I try to have in mind an actor(or acquaintance of mine) who would “play” that character, which helps me to keep the voices consistent.   It’s fun to work with the author on getting the voices right, making sure we’ve both got the same sense of who these characters are and what they’re feeling. I e-mailed  MP3s to Deborah to test-drive some of the voices.

I imagine I’m pretty interesting to WATCH while narrating, too.  Ryan’s voice(in Book 3) is just disdainful of everything, and I can feel myself tighten up my entire face when I do his voice, like I’m looking down my nose, or like I think the people I’m talking to smell bad or something. And for Ned, he’s a huge guy with a huge chest and neck, and I kind of swell up and pitch my voice way down in my chest for his lines. But I don’t think we’re gonna be releasing the accompanying narrator-videos for these books any time soon; that might tend to detract from the storyline!

Deborah: It would be fun to watch Michelle in action, but she makes the characters so real you don’t have to see her (or them) to feel you know each one, which is why it makes me really happy to know that sight-impaired people have three more audiobooks to select for their reading pleasure.

Michelle: And this is a neat way for busy people to enjoy more books.  Audiobooks that download to your Smartphone, Kindle or laptop can help keep people informed and/ or entertained while jogging, housecleaning or commuting.  Everybody’s “TBR”(to-be-read) list could be transformed into a “TBL” list. Of course, it’s a different experience, and maybe a different audience for print and for audiobooks.

Deborah: I can’t leave without mentioning that my new Rewinding Time series will soon be released, beginning with Once Again this fall. Merri from the trilogy is now an adult, a professor of history with her own mysteries to solve. In Once Again, Merri gets to know the Garretsons, one of the first American families to settle on the Illinois frontier. Their descendent Brett is also a faculty member at Merri’s college and determined to convince her to date him. She thinks that’s a dangerous idea. You can read about the history behind Once Again and all my books on my website www.deborahheal.com.

Publisher's Summary

An old house + A new computer program = The travel opportunity of a lifetime...to another century.
Abby Thomas is spending the summer in a run-down old house with a bratty pre-teen named Merrideth she is supposed to tutor. Not a dream job. But it does come with perks.
There's John Roberts, a devastatingly attractive neighbor who is almost too wonderful to be real.
And there's the new computer program Beautiful Houses--also too amazing to be real. No one knows how it works, but with it she can rewind and fast-forward the lives of all the people who ever lived in the house, including Charlotte Miles.
In 1858, the house is a train stop on the Alton & Chicago Line. And Charlotte is stuck there serving meals to the passengers, wondering if she'll ever get to have any fun. And then she meets two travelers who change her life forever.
There's James McGuire with whom she falls in love. And there's his boss, a young Springfield lawyer named Abraham Lincoln. His debate with political opponent Stephen Douglas catapults him onto the national stage. And it inspires Charlotte to take up the cause of abolition.
The House
A stop on the Alton & Chicago Line. A stop on the Underground Railroad.
Watching the house's history unfold, Abby and Merrideth gain a new perspective on their own lives as time and again they see God's loving hand in the lives of its inhabitants.

Unclaimed Legacy: Book 2 in the History Mystery Series | [Deborah Heal]Unclaimed Legacy: Book 2 in the History Mystery Series

Publisher's Summary

It's like being there... only you can fast-forward and rewind.
"I call it time-surfing," Abby said. "It's like being there, except no one can see or hear us."
"Whatever you call it," John said, "that was crazy - what we just did. Beyond realistic. I mean, I was in that guy's head and knew everything he was thinking."
Abby's weird computer program is working again. And it comes in handy when she and her friends agree to help the Old Dears with their family tree.
Except Abby and John learn more about one of the ladies' ancestors than they ever wanted to know. Convicted in 1871 of murder and arson, Reuben Buchanan is a blight on the family's reputation. But was he really guilty? Abby and John must get inside the mind of a murderer to find out.
And while they're rummaging around in the Old Dears' family history, they also find Nathan Buchanan, a heroic relative connected to the Lewis and Clark Expedition - and a legacy waiting to be reclaimed. But the most important discovery they make is that God's promise to bless a thousand generations is true.

Every Hill and Mountain: Book 3 in the History Mystery Series | [Deborah Heal]

Every Hill and Mountain: Book 3 in the History Mystery Series

Publisher's Summary

Visiting another century.... not the summer vacation she had planned.
Those who have read Time and Again and Unclaimed Legacy know that Abby Thomas is a college student on a summer service project with 11-year-old Merri. And they know that the summer is not going the way Abby had expected - but in a good way. For one thing, she meets a very nice guy named John Roberts. And for another, she discovers a strange computer program called Beautiful House that lets her fast-forward and rewind life. Not her own, of course, but those of the people who lived in Merri's old house. And the Old Dears' old house, and... well, any old house.
And since the program worked so well for the Old Dears' family tree project, Abby's college roommate Kate hopes it will help her find out more about her ancestor Ned Greenfield. And Kate's fiance Ryan thinks the program has lucrative commercial potential.
Abby and John reluctantly agree to help Kate, but only on the condition that she and Ryan promise to keep the program a secret, because if it fell into the wrong hands... well, no one wants Big Brother invading their privacy.
The two couples take a trip to the tiny town of Equality, set in the hills of southern Illinois and the breath-taking Shawnee National Forest. According to Kate's research, Ned Greenfield was born there at a place called Hickory Hill.
The mayor, police chief, and townspeople are hospitable and helpful - until the topic of Hickory Hill comes up. They seem determined to keep them away, telling them, "There's nothing there for you to see."
Eventually they find Hickory Hill on their own - both the mansion and the lonely hill it sits upon. Built in 1834, Hickory Hill stands sentinel over Half Moon Salt Mine where the original owner John Granger accumulated his blood-tainted fortune.

The Cleansing Spotlight Post

Crafted by Michael Connor, ‘The Cleansing’ takes readers back to the turn of the 21st century, as one young African woman struggles to weigh up life and her culture’s constant conflict between old and new. In a world that is rapidly progressing and modernising, her stagnant culture refuses to end the ritual of ‘widow cleansing’; or forced rape of those who have recently lost their husband.

There is no way to sugar-coat or gloss over the harrowing reality of widow cleansing, a disgusting African ritual that sees recently-widowed women raped by tribespeople to literally cleanse them of their past. This form of abuse has recently been addressed by both the House of Lords and United Nations but, in a compelling new psychological drama novel, author Michael Connor uses one woman’s personal story to depict this horror in new vivid light.
‘The Cleansing’ fuses an exposé’ of this ritual with a heartfelt fictional story of the struggle between old and new, the tangled mess of life and love and a dramatic look at one young woman’s attempts to keep herself in one piece.

Synopsis:
It quickly becomes clear Romance is the name of the main character, not the emotional entanglement in which she lives. A shy, but quietly determined young woman, working in a small southern African town - saving furiously for the future but living a day’s journey from her village and her husband. Life appears routine.

Whilst she is facing up to the trials and sadness a lonely New Year brings, the consequences and implications of the traditional rites of the past, still practiced throughout her country and more apparently around where she lives, force her to make some life changing decisions.

We are taken into towns where western values and aspirations encroach, into townships where the black economy and old rituals persist and through shanty towns on city boundaries where tsotsi gangs run vice and drugs.

Connor weaves a powerful plot, full of vivid encounters and fascinating characters. He depicts the harsh reality that still faces many, particularly the women, in Africa today, but never missing those opportunities for touches of humour and moments of gentleness that allow for hope to survive in desperate circumstances. A well deserved read.

Excerpt

“Alright.” He raised his brow as he walked over to the nightstand, writing something on the notepad. “Here’s my cell number, call me if you need anything. I only live about ten minutes away. Seriously, if you need anything, just use the motel phone.”I took the ripped piece of paper he handed me. “Thanks.” I knew I needed it so I could talk to him about my car, but that’s as far as it would go.“I mean it, anything,” he said as he walked to the door, resting his hand against the frame. “Can I get you something before I leave? Dinner?”

“No, I’m not hungry at all, but thanks for offering. I think I’m ready to get some sleep,” I admitted.

“I’ll keep you posted about your car,” he said.

“Thanks,” I said, thankful that I would get to see him again, but feeling like a mixed up basket case for not trusting him. I was a freaking mess.

“Goodnight Cassandra,” he said quietly before closing the door and walking away.

Yeah, right. Goodnight in this place was going to be hard to come by. I locked the door after he left and walked over to the bed. I drew the covers back and found exactly what I’d pictured… Stains. Gross. I pulled the covers back over the bed and decided to sleep with a towel over me instead. I walked into the filthy bathroom, quickly grabbed a towel, and ran back to the room like a scared child. I put on a pair of yoga pants and a t-shirt and was ready to get some rest. It had been an unusually long day between the long drive, the accident, and the hospital. Too exhausted for continued thinking, I let my brain off the hook and laid down on the hard mattress. As I pulled the towel over my body, I noticed my feet were going to be hanging out all night. Great.

I gently laid my sore head back onto the pillow and blinked my eyes a few times. I was right. Sweet dreams were extremely hard to come by in this place, but I tried. I closed my eyes and fell asleep.

Based on the way I felt the next morning, I’d gotten only a few hours of sleep at the most. Between the noises, the creaks, and the foul smell, I didn’t know which was worse. That was, by far, the worst night’s sleep I’ve ever had. The morning sun shone brightly through the yellowed curtains, and I decided to give up on trying to get any more sleep.

I ripped the towel off of me and was about to put my feet on the floor and there it was. Staring back at me as if I were invading his turf was an over sized, nasty, grey rat. “OH MY GOD!” I screamed as I jumped up and stood on the bed, unsure of what to do if he were to start climbing up. I let out another loud scream as it raised itself up with its beady little eyes staring, making it scurry off under the bed. This was even worse; now I couldn’t see the damn thing.

I jumped off the bed and collected my belongings faster than I even realized I could. I threw on a jacket before making a mad dash for the door, slamming it behind me. “Holy shit, that was gross,” I said breathlessly. I took a moment to compose myself, and to think about what to do next. I was not going back into that room. That was for certain.

“Are you looking for a place to stay yet?” I heard his familiar voice from afar. I peeked over the railing, and there he was standing with his arms crossed, wearing a sexy grin, faded jeans, and a tight white tee.

Sometimes it feels good to be bad . . .

But keeping his wild side in check becomes nearly impossible when Kathy Mae Smith starts working for him. She's shy, modest, and sexy as hell. Slow, sweet seduction has never been his style, but then Dave has never wanted a woman like this before . . . Thanks to her ex-husband, Kathy doesn't know if she can ever trust another man. And she certainly isn't about to jeopardize her job by jumping into bed with her hot new boss. Yet Dave is kind, caring, and his sizzling persistence is about to burn through the last of her defenses-until her past catches up with her. If she surrenders the truth to Mr. Perfect, will she lose him . . . or get a second shot at love?

TEMPTING MR. PERFECT excerpt #2

Slow, he reminded himself. Take your time. When he slid his tongue into her mouth Kathy’s body tightened under the arm he had wrapped around her. She fisted her fingers in his hair and tried to take them both deeper, wilder, but he wouldn’t allow it. Keeping the kiss gentle he took his time tasting, all the while memorizing the smooth texture of her lips. “You’re so beautiful, Kathy,” he said, against her mouth.

“Come inside.”

He sat back to look at the woman he hoped would someday be his. He’d known from the instant they met in the Lion’s manager’s office when Sophie had worked there. Kathy was the kind of woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. But he couldn’t tell her, not yet. Not when there were still things she needed to know about him and him about her.

He pulled into her apartment building parking lot then turned to her. “You and I…the first time we make love, it’s going to be special. Not just a grope fest.”

“There’s nothing wrong with those.” Kathy teased with a hand caressing up his thigh.

“Nope, there isn’t as long as you’re both getting something great out of it.” He took her hand in his and started to gently rub his thumb over the back of it. “I want to make you squirm and hear you scream out my name. I don’t want the chance to catch our breath—no downtime, only passion.” He began to put more pressure on the friction of her thumb pad. “When you come that first time, I want it in my mouth. My God, Kathy, I can’t even get close to telling you how much I need you because I’m so overwhelmed by you.”

“Oh, Jesus,” she whispered. “Tell me more. Tell me how.”

“I want to take you in every position possible with long slow strokes.” His eyes burned into hers, and when he moved his hand under her skirt he found her moist. Gently he glided his middle finger in small circles over the dampness when he heard her breath shutter then gasp as he applied pressure. “I’d love to taste you now.” He brought his hand to his mouth and sucked on the finger that he just teased her with.

“Dave?” Her body slithered lower in her seat, her eyes wide and filled with passion.

“Yes?”

“I feel like I’m going to explode. Pleasssse,” she pleaded.

“Please what?”

“Come inside.”

Book Excerpt:

Amy sat up very straight, her eyes on Grace. David glanced briefly at the cards, put three down on the table and passed the rest back to Laura, who then stood waiting for their order.

“Grace, these dessert choices are coded,” he said quietly.

“Each of them hints at the type of trial you want this evening. Here, look at them and you’ll see what I mean.”

Grace’s stomach tightened with fear. For a short time she’d forgotten what lay ahead, but now there was no way out. If she wanted to keep David, and after their conversation earlier she knew without a doubt that she did, then she had to go through with this. All around her other women were also looking at cards and making choices. One looked excited, but the others looked as nervous as Grace was feeling.

“Tantalizing Tiramisu, Obedient Orange Sorbet or Controlled Chocolate Delight,” she read aloud.

“I think you should leave the Controlled Chocolate Delight for another month,” said David quietly. “Choose from the first two.”

Grace began to tremble. “I don’t want either,” she whispered. “I don’t know what they mean. I don’t think I can do this.”

“Then you simply refuse the dessert, my darling, but of course you know what that will mean for us.”

“I’m scared; doesn’t that matter to you?”

“Don’t be scared. You don’t have to choose anything, you know that. If none of them appeal to you, then all you have to do is tell Laura. There’s no pressure on you, Gracie, it’s only that . . .”

Trembling, Grace looked at him, and saw the regret in his eyes. She wanted to go on, to take the final step into the unknown, but the descriptions on the cards didn’t give her enough of a clue for her to dare to choose anything with any confidence.

“The tiramisu should be nice,” murmured Amy, leaning close to Grace so that no one near could hear. “Choose that. You’ll be fine.”

As Grace hesitated, Amber came to their table. “Is there a problem?” she asked.

Looking up, Grace saw that Amber had guessed what was happening and was enjoying it. She also noticed that Amber had rested one hand possessively on David’s left shoulder. “No, I’m spoilt for choice, that’s all,” she said brightly. “I think I’ll go for the Tantalizing Tiramisu. It sounds fascinating.”

Laura wrote it down and went away and Amy smiled and touched Grace’s arm encouragingly while Amber merely nodded before walking off. All around them groups of three were getting up from their tables and making their way out of the dining room.

“Well done,” said David. With a sigh of relief he pushed back his chair. “We’re in the study for dessert tonight aren’t we, Amy?”

Amy nodded.

“Aren’t you coming too?” asked Grace.

“No, I’m hardly ever involved at a guest’s first trial. My skills are for the higher tables. Good luck though,” she added more quietly, “and try to enjoy it. It’s one of the best

choices you can get.” With that, Amy hurried off to join another group.

Grace felt bereft as she watched her go. Now she knew that whatever lay ahead she had to cope with it on her own, because she was certain that no one else was going to help her in any way at all.

Silently David guided Grace out of the dining room, down the hallway and along a short corridor. He then opened a concealed door and she stepped inside.

“Hello,” said Amber, getting up from a chair to greet her. “Do come in. Andrew and I are both so pleased you chose the tiramisu.”

Grace took a step backwards, feeling her heart racing and aware that the palms of her hands were damp with fear, but David was standing behind her, and before she could say anything he’d locked the study door and dropped the key into a jar on a high shelf.

“Welcome to your first trial, my darling,” he murmured. “I’m sure we’re all going to have a wonderful time.”

Book Exceprt:
She glanced down at her bikini, and then upward again, scanning his bare chest and hoping she wasn’t drooling, because she was so over wanting him. She took the glass and sipped from the straw. Orange and pineapple and a touch of vodka exploded on her tongue. “Thanks,” she said, unsure what more she could say without blurting out her anger over his abandonment.

So, maybe she wasn’t over him. The thought deflated her. Her gaze dropped to her drink.

Sergei lowered to sit in the sand beside her chaise. “You’re rested?”

“I am. The bed is very comfortable.” She couldn’t pull her gaze from him. His was directed at the sea, his strong profile achingly dear.

The moment stretched, and she grew restless. After she’d missed her chance back at the mansion to lay it all out there, to bare her soul, she’d lost her courage. But anger rose again, giving starch to her backbone. “Do you feel anything for me?” God, had she really asked that out loud? How pathetic must she sound?

Sergei’s face swung toward her.

Reading what was going on behind his brown eyes was impossible. But his mouth, dear Lord, his mouth—the firm line was softening, curving into his familiar crooked smile.

“Are you angry with me?”

She was glaring. So maybe that question was looking for the secrets locked deep inside her. “I am. After everything we shared, you put me in a guest room.”

“You needed rest.” His eyebrows rose. “You were swaying on your feet when we arrived.”

“I needed comfort. I was scared.” Her fingers tightened on the wooden arm of the chaise.

“But you were safe. You had nothing to fear.”

“I wasn’t afraid of being attacked again, you moron. I was afraid you didn’t love me.” She clamped her jaws closed and stared at him wide-eyed. Nothing like blurting out my feelings.

His mouth stretched and he began to laugh. Loudly. Holding his belly and bending.

Infuriating. With a determined move, she reached out and tipped her glass over his head.

Then he laughed harder. “Better run, sweetheart. You’ve earned a spanking.”

Her heart thrilled, and she pushed off the chaise, squealing as she ran for the water. She was thigh deep when a strong arm looped around her waist and pulled her hard against a solid wall of muscle.

“So I’m a moron?” he growled in her ear.

“I don’t know where that came from,” she gasped. But she was lying. She’d wanted to call him a bastard, a motherfucker, every foul name she could think of, she was so frustrated by the distance he’d placed between them.

In the next instant, she went still, remembering what he’d just said. “You’re going to spank me?”

“Later. Promise,” he whispered.
