Meet the Author:

Hulda Bachman–Neeb was born in Indonesia of colonial Dutch parentage two years before the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. Because much of Asia fell under Japanese control, all non-Asians were imprisoned in concentration camps until August of 1945, the end of the war in the Pacific. As a member of the Dutch Foreign Service in her adult life, Hulda held assignments in twenty-five countries over a period of thirty-six years, retiring in 1996. She is married to an American, James Bachman, a historian and author, and has dual citizenship. Hulda and her husband live in Estes Park, Colorado.

A little bit about myself, Hulda Bachman-Neeb

I have traveled a lot. To be exact, from 1963 to 1996 my career took me to 27 countries. I was employed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My first posting as a 23 year old youngster took me to the Netherlands Embassy in Damascus, Syria, to be the secretary to the Ambassador. I was no stranger to foreign countries, having been born and raised in Indonesia, visiting with my parents in Dutch New Guinea, studying in Munich and Geneva, traveling around Europe. I entered the Foreign Service on the strength of my language skills and my studies abroad.  Often, I am asked what country or place I liked best. My answer always is that it depended on my frame of mind. In the course of 1963 to 1996 I hopefully grew. And every country required different adjustments, a different way to process impressions and images. The Avid Reader may understand that while in these countries I also tried to read books pertaining to the specific culture to widen my understanding. Usually these postings lasted for two years, but as an interlude, from 1981 to 1990, I was assigned to a different group of civil servants, “the Flying Squad”. We were a handful of men and women who were sent out to our Embassies that needed an extra hand. These assignments lasted from several weeks to several months.

I am glad I have traveled when I did. Today the world has changed, traveling has changed, and I am happy I am where I am right now, in time and place.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

Michelle Cox is the author of the multiple award-winning Henrietta and Inspector Howard series as well as "Novel Notes of Local Lore," a weekly blog dedicated to Chicago's forgotten residents. He is an adjunct professor in the Graduate Department of Public Policy and Administration at the Camden Campus of Rutgers University and sits on various public, non-profit and corporate boards.
