Meet the Author:
Alysson Foti Bourque earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a Juris Doctor degree from the Southern University Law Center. After practicing law for six years, she traded in writing trial briefs for writing children’s books. She enjoys public speaking opportunities at schools, conferences, and festivals nationwide. She hopes to inspire people of all ages to follow their dreams and believe in themselves. Currently, she resides in Sunset, Louisiana with her husband and two children.

Interview with Alysson Foti Bourque:
Do you read much and if so what are your favorite genres?I do! I read many different types of genres. Each week I read at least one new children’s book for my KidLit Pick news segment that airs weekly. I also like to read what my children are reading, so I read graphic novels and chapter books. When I have time for myself, I like to curl up with a self-help book and a good love story.
Who are your favorite authors?
I think the world of Mo Willems, Jennifer Niven, Kate Dicamillo, Ben Clanton, Rachel Hollis, Angie Thomas, and Becky Albertalli.
Over the years, what would you say has improved significantly in your writing?
Over the years, I have become less “wordy”. I have learned to tell the story through text and pictures.
What is the most important thing about a book in your opinion?The most important thing about a book is that it needs to be written for the reader who is reading it. Often, an author will write how they think it should be written. By putting your “reader hat” on, your entire way of writing can change.
What is your take on the importance of a good cover and title?No matter what people say, a book is judged by its front and back cover. It is so important to be brief, but informative, on the cover. Don’t give it all away either.
