C.R. Richards’ literary

Title: Know Your Level of Scare Tolerance for Dark Fiction This
Halloween
Autumn is upon us. Life slowly fades from the leaves. They
release their grip on the branches to drift gently to the ground. The sun’s
warmth withdraws as Winter’s chilly fingers reach through the air to stroke our
skin and hair. Promises of snow are in the wind.
We grab our fuzzy slippers and a hot cup of tea. Then we
head to the fireplace with a good book. Our tastes turn dark. We want to read
about grisly murders or paranormal haunts. Some may turn to horror or dark
fantasy. No matter what genre we select, October is the time for Halloween
scares.
What Makes Good Dark
Fiction
So, what is “dark fiction?” I classify the genre as any
story which explores the darker or evil side of human nature. Authors also
explore the themes of death. Frequently categorized as a sub-genre of horror, dark
fiction makes us feel fear, anger, and sorrow. The category includes horror, dark
fantasy, paranormal, and even samples of YA fantasy. Some may disagree with my
classification, but that’s okay. Sub-genres are hard to pinpoint and are often
open to interpretation.
Good dark fiction feeds our need to be scared, especially
during the Halloween season. It presents the Reader with plausible plots and
likable characters. We care about their well-being. Dark fiction takes it up a
notch with a masterful twist few genres can match. Fear. Authors of dark
fiction use this emotion as a tool to build our sense of conflict and tension.
Our level of angst builds and builds until, ultimately, we
find ourselves screaming, “DON’T GO INTO THE BASEMENT, BECKY!”
Knowing Your Level of
Scare Tolerance
I have a dear friend who purchases my books and comes to all
my signings. She’s super supportive. I appreciate her friendship. Only a true
friend would buy my books even though she has no intention of reading them. And
I completely understand her reasons. My books are way too scary and gruesome
for her.
Horror and dark fantasy are not for everyone. These stories
can cause bouts of queasiness and insomnia. It’s essential to know your level
of scare tolerance, before grabbing a dark fiction book from the shelf.
Here is my breakdown:

Horror Light – These stories contain mildly
aggressive phantasms, hauntings by help-seeking ghosts, folk creatures and
scary supernatural characters
·
Horror Mid-Range – Contains gruesome details,
but most are alluded to rather than spelled out in bright bloody letters. Flesh-eating
zombie chases. Poltergeists. Malicious hauntings, etc.
·
Horror Hardcore – Think slasher movies. Blood
and guts. Demonic possessions. Things that will keep you up at night
My work falls into the “Horror Mid-Range” area. In the Heart of the Warrior series,
flesh-eaters called, The Dirge, chase
my main characters. They crave human meat. I allude to these creatures gnawing
at living flesh and bone but don’t go into a great deal of detail.
I’m not a fan of slasher movies or “Horror Hardcore.” Why? I
have a low tolerance for gross-out scenes. The Horror Community gets together
each year at Killercon. This outstanding convention celebrates writers and
artists of the genre. They used to have a “Gross-Out” contest. I attended one
year and thought I’d lose every meal I’d eaten since 1990! We have some very talented horror writers who
use gore like paint. And their fans love it!
